Each year, more and more people suffer from health problems caused by work-related stress, leading them to start using medication which may become harmful in the long run.

In addition, people suffering from stress often believe its part of the cost of having a good job position or “its just the way things are”. Many of us don’t really grasp the impact stress is having on our health even after symptoms of a stress-related diseases appear, such as nervous tics, insomnia or, as it occurred to me at age 26, having surgery performed due to gastrointestinal problems.

Many companies have now started paying more attention to their employee’s habits and quality of life both in the office and at home, and as part of that we can say that Yoga is here to stay as it is slowly seeping into corporate culture as a way to change how we work and de-stress after a day in the office.

National and international companies are now offering Yoga programs as an option for their employees to stay focused, united, creative and productive.

When talking about work-related stress, Yoga can help us:

  • Lower our cortisol levels, as cortisol is the hormone responsible for stress.
  • Work on having a better breathing technique, filling us with peace in any work or personal situation.
  • Regulate the pressure on our shoulders, backbone, head and spine by using different asanas – or posture sequences – that will balance our weight and muscle pressure.
  • Enhance our focus and concentration just before a meeting or presentation by using simple breathing techniques and exercises – known as pranayamas.
  • Boost self-esteem by feeling more complete, balanced and active.

Practicing Yoga on a regular basis can help us improve our life in many aspects; it will help us feel more connected to other resulting in more meaningful and fulfilling relationships, will help us detox and even increase our lung capacity, improve our circulation and tone muscles in an organic and relaxed way.

Be sure to give a try as this is no passing fad: being healthy and balanced is never out of style!
