Keeping it simple means employing base line neutral colors and pieces and using various elements to frame and emphasize its simplicity and elegance without cluttering the space and drawing attention to some focal points throughout the room.

This is similar to minimalism, which means making space for what is essential offering a better arrangement in our home to be able to concentrate and relax, enjoying every room in your home.

For example, the main element in a bedroom is the bed and the best way to achieve a wider appearance of the whole room is by choosing white bedspreads, since light colors are expansive and airy. This will make the room appear brighter and bigger than if we were using dark elements, but if you feel a little bit reluctant about a white bedspread using a light colored one will also do the trick. Having light colors in the bedroom will create a calmer, softer atmosphere.

Achieving balance between light and dark colors in a room doesn’t exactly mean that if you have a white wall you must have a black one, but to find elements that achieve contrast in the right way depending on the colors we decide to use on the walls and main elements in the room.

Adding colorful items to a room is a great way to change the perception of it: blue encourages relaxation; green inspires calm; yellow captures the joy of sunshine and communicates happiness while red raises a room’s energy level. For example, if we have neutral colored walls and a light bedspread we can add a dark bedside table and accents in white or other light colored elements.

If we are talking about white furniture, it’s easier to add elements since we already have the piece that will light up the space. Let’s take for example the white individual couch and the white piece below the window, pictured above. First, we added a small piece of fabric in a grey tone with some books above it.

The books have dark blue hues so we balanced it with the lighter shade of blue of the hookah in the corner. Even though the books have a dark hue, it looks good because we already have lots of light, even natural light coming through the window.

For a focal point, we added a colorful element: the handmade plate. It’s a very special piece since it attracts your attention and we use it’s blue color to balance what we already have set up in the room. Love that piece? You can find this kind of plates in markets and artisanal products stores. The one pictured is from Dolores Hidalgo, Guanajuato, and is a hand-made piece.

When having trouble organizing and to avoid cluttered spaces in our house, container boxes are a great option. You will find handmade baskets are easy to come by in Mexico, and they serve a double purpose as they can be used as decorative elements as well. Try several sizes and even colors and patterns for a unique Mexican modern look.

Two more accessories are pictured above, for the hand soap and the toothbrush. These marble-inspired with rose gold details containers are an example of a neutral element you can add to a room: when you’re not sure which color to use, always go with neutral and light ones.

Remember: in the end, the most important thing for any room in your home is to take care of the lighting, being able to maintain balance between personality and functionality, keeping in check that sometimes less is more while using only what you need.
