Have you ever eaten a little bit too much during Winter break? I’m sure we’ve all done it.

The Holiday season is full of opportunities of breaking the rules and eating thing we wouldn’t normally eat but it is important to keep in mind the effort we’ve made to stay in shape during the whole year and return to healthier habits as soon as possible!

To prevent weight-related regrets after the Holiday season we can follow some easy tips, all based in common sense and a little bit of restrain. First, let’s make clear we can break our diet a bit during Holiday dinners and reunions but always remembering that the following day should strictly follow our diet to balance out consumption a bit. Even if it’s the Holiday season, it’s not like we have Christmas dinner every day!

Discipline is at the core healthy habits: when talking about healthy eating, discipline it is just as important as what we are eating.

But some other tips and tricks can help you too.

  • Keep active and keep moving. Try to avoid sitting for long periods of time and try to move a bit between courses, this will help your body keep active and food will be digested quickly.
  • Have a backup exercise plan and stay hydrated. It might sound a little overwhelming but try to keep track of your food intake and activity level and if you are able try and keep up with your regular exercise plan to avoid letting your body go into recess mode. Remember: staying hydrated is just as important as staying active and you can sometimes confuse thirst with hunger, so have a large glass of water before eating.
  • Find alternative exercise routines in and around the house. It may be a long walk downtown, playing a soccer match with visiting relatives or even playing Wii with your kids, just remember to keep active!
  • Take a look at the menu. Combining food from the same group is never a good idea: you’ve got to choose between tamales and cake, between the turkey and the ham, and so on. Also, try to avoid high calorie drinks and have some tea, home-made coffee or even a little punch instead.

Staying fit and healthy is no easy fit, but you’ll see that following these and other tips it is more easily accomplished. Don’t forget to enjoy Winter and everything that comes with it and the Holidays, just keep away from excess and you’ll be fine!
